Frequently asked questions.
What is a musculoskeletal screening?
A musculoskeletal screening is a clinical assessment of how your joints, muscles, movement patterns and strength are functioning. It can help identify areas of stiffness, weakness, sensitivity, imbalance or reduced load tolerance that may be affecting how you move, train or perform.
At Personal-Physio, MSK screening is used to build a clearer picture of your body and provide practical recommendations for movement, rehabilitation, training or injury prevention.
Who is musculoskeletal screening suitable for?
MSK screening can be useful for active adults, gym-goers, runners, recreational athletes, office workers, people with recurring aches, and anyone who wants a better understanding of how their body is moving.
It may also be helpful if you are returning to training after time away, preparing for a sporting event, managing recurring niggles, or wanting to reduce the risk of overload injuries.
Do I need to be injured to book a musculoskeletal screening?
No. You do not need to be injured. Many people book an MSK screening because they want to understand their movement, strength, mobility and physical capacity before problems become more limiting.
If you are already in pain, the screening can also help identify what may be contributing to your symptoms and whether physiotherapy or rehabilitation would be appropriate.
What happens during an MSK screening?
Your session will usually include a discussion about your injury history, training habits, work demands, lifestyle, goals and any current concerns.
The physical assessment may include joint mobility testing, strength testing, balance, functional movement tasks, postural observation and specific tests where clinically relevant. The exact assessment is tailored to your body, symptoms and goals.
Is musculoskeletal screening the same as physiotherapy?
It is closely related, but not always the same. A physiotherapy appointment is usually focused on assessing and treating a specific pain, injury or condition.
A musculoskeletal screening is often broader. It looks at movement, strength, mobility and function to identify areas that may need attention, even if you are not currently injured. If a specific problem is found, physiotherapy or rehabilitation may be recommended.
Can MSK screening help prevent injuries?
MSK screening can help identify factors that may contribute to injury risk, such as reduced strength, poor load tolerance, stiffness, balance issues, movement limitations or training errors.
It cannot guarantee injury prevention, but it can provide useful information and a structured plan to improve how your body tolerates work, training, sport and daily activity.
What areas of the body are assessed?
This depends on your goals and any symptoms you have. Screening may include the spine, hips, knees, ankles, shoulders, neck, upper back, feet, balance, strength and functional movement patterns.
For example, a runner may need more focus on lower-limb strength, calf capacity, hip control and running-related movement. An office worker may need more focus on neck, back, shoulders, posture tolerance and strength endurance.
Will I receive exercises after the screening?
Yes. Where appropriate, you will receive practical recommendations and exercises based on your findings.
These may include mobility work, strengthening, balance exercises, movement control drills, gym-based progressions, running-related exercises or advice on how to modify training. The aim is to make the plan useful, realistic and specific to your goals.
Can MSK screening help with recurring injuries?
Yes. Recurring injuries often happen when the underlying contributing factors have not been fully addressed. These may include strength deficits, poor load management, reduced mobility, previous injury, movement habits or incomplete rehabilitation.
An MSK screening can help identify patterns that may be contributing to repeated flare-ups and guide a more structured plan for long-term improvement.
Is MSK screening useful before starting a gym or training programme?
Yes. If you are starting or returning to training, an MSK screening can help identify your current baseline and highlight areas that may need attention before you increase load, intensity or volume.
This can be particularly useful if you have a history of back pain, knee pain, shoulder pain, tendon issues, previous surgery or recurring training-related injuries.
Do you use strength or load testing during screening?
Where appropriate, strength and load tolerance can be assessed as part of the session. This may include clinical strength testing, gym-based movement assessment, single-leg control, pushing, pulling, squatting, hinging or other relevant tasks.
The aim is to understand what your body currently tolerates and what needs to improve for your goals.
Do you offer musculoskeletal screening at UNTIL Soho?
Yes. Personal-Physio provides musculoskeletal screening from UNTIL Soho in Central London. The clinic setting allows assessment, hands-on clinical testing, movement screening and gym-based strength or functional testing where appropriate.
Home visit physiotherapy is also available across London, although full gym-based screening is best suited to the UNTIL Soho setting.
What should I wear to an MSK screening?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Sportswear or gym clothing is usually best, especially if your screening involves squatting, lunging, balance work, strength testing or gym-based movement assessment.
Trainers are recommended if you want your walking, running, gym or sport-related movement assessed.
What makes Personal-Physio different for MSK screening?
Personal-Physio combines clinical physiotherapy assessment, hands-on expertise, rehabilitation and strength & conditioning. The focus is not just on identifying limitations, but on giving you a clear plan to move better, build strength, reduce recurring problems and support long-term physical confidence.
The approach is one-to-one, personalised and designed around your lifestyle, work demands, training goals and injury history.
