Physiotherapist assessing shoulder movement

Introduction

Whether you’re dealing with a new injury, persistent pain, returning to exercise, or need guidance with an existing rehabilitation programme, an online consultation provides an opportunity to discuss your symptoms, assess movement and function, and develop a clear plan for moving forward.
At Personal-Physio, the emphasis is on understanding your individual presentation rather than simply providing a generic list of exercises. Your consultation will consider your symptoms, lifestyle, activity levels and goals to help identify what may be contributing to the problem and what you can do about it.

What is Online Physiotherapy?

Many musculoskeletal problems can be meaningfully assessed and managed through a video consultation.
While an online appointment cannot replicate every element of an in-person physical examination, a physiotherapy assessment involves much more than hands-on testing.
Understanding how your symptoms started, what aggravates or eases them, your medical and injury history, your activity levels and how you move can provide valuable clinical information.
During your consultation, you may be guided through relevant movements, strength tests or functional tasks to help build a clearer picture of your presentation.
From there, we can discuss the findings, what may be contributing to your symptoms and the most appropriate next steps.

Clinical Services

What happens during an Online Physiotherapy Assessment?

Understanding your symptoms

Your consultation begins with a detailed discussion about your current problem.
We’ll explore how and when your symptoms started, what makes them better or worse, previous injuries or treatment, your general health, activity levels and how the problem is affecting your day-to-day life.
Most importantly, we’ll discuss what you want to get back to doing.

Movement and functional assessment

Where appropriate, you’ll be guided through movements and functional tests over video.
Depending on your presentation, this might include looking at mobility, strength, balance or movements relevant to your symptoms, work, exercise or sport.
The assessment is adapted to your individual presentation rather than following a standard series of tests.

Understanding the findings

A key part of physiotherapy is understanding what the assessment means.
We’ll discuss the findings with you, what may be contributing to your symptoms and the reasoning behind the recommended approach.
The aim is for you to leave the consultation with a clearer understanding of the problem rather than simply being given exercises to perform.

Creating your rehabilitation plan

Where appropriate, we’ll identify exercises and practical strategies to help address the findings from your assessment. Return to full function and resilience
This may involve improving mobility, gradually rebuilding strength and load tolerance, modifying activity temporarily, or establishing a progressive return to exercise or sport.
Your programme will be based around your individual goals and current capabilities.

Follow-up exercise programme

Following your consultation, you’ll receive a follow-up email summarising the relevant recommendations.
Where appropriate, you’ll also receive a personalised home exercise programme through Physitrack, with exercise instructions and video demonstrations so that you have a clear programme to follow between appointments.

More than just exercises

It is easy to find exercises online.
The more difficult question is knowing which exercises are appropriate for you, why you are doing them, how much to do and when to progress them.
That is where an individual assessment becomes important.
At Personal-Physio, rehabilitation is based on understanding your presentation first and then using that information to make informed decisions about movement, exercise and progressive loading.
The goal is not simply to reduce symptoms.
It is to help you understand your body, rebuild physical capacity and return confidently to the activities that matter to you.
Move Better. Get Stronger. Stay Capable.

When might an in-person appointment be more appropriate?

Online physiotherapy is useful for many presentations, but it is not appropriate for every situation.
An in-person appointment may be recommended where a more detailed physical examination, hands-on assessment or treatment would provide useful additional information.
There may also be circumstances where your history or symptoms indicate that assessment by your GP, another healthcare professional or further investigation is more appropriate.
If this becomes apparent during your online consultation, this will be discussed with you and appropriate next steps recommended.
If you already know that you would prefer a comprehensive face-to-face assessment, you can book an in-person physiotherapy appointment at Personal-Physio in Central London.

Frequently asked questions.

Can a physiotherapist really assess me online?
Many aspects of a musculoskeletal physiotherapy assessment can be performed effectively through video consultation.
Your history provides important clinical information, and you can be guided through movements and functional tests while your physiotherapist observes how you move and how your symptoms respond.
There are limitations to an online assessment because certain hands-on tests cannot be performed remotely. If an in-person examination would be beneficial, this will be explained to you.
Online physiotherapy can be suitable for many common musculoskeletal problems, including back and neck pain, joint and muscle problems, sports injuries, tendon problems and rehabilitation following injury.
It can also be useful if you already understand your diagnosis but need help developing or progressing an exercise and rehabilitation programme.
Suitability ultimately depends on your individual presentation rather than the name of the condition.
No. You can book an assessment based on your symptoms, even if you are unsure what is causing them.
The purpose of the consultation is to understand your history and presentation, assess relevant movement and function, and discuss what may be contributing to your symptoms.
Where a definitive diagnosis cannot reasonably be established online, this will be explained and further assessment recommended if necessary.
You will need a device with a camera and microphone, such as a laptop, tablet or smartphone, together with a reliable internet connection.
Ideally, position your device somewhere that allows enough space for your physiotherapist to see you perform basic movements.
Comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely is recommended.
If specific equipment is required for your rehabilitation, this can be discussed during your consultation.
Try to have enough space around you to perform simple movements safely and position your camera so that your physiotherapist can see as much of your body as possible when required.
It can also be useful to have details of any relevant previous investigations, diagnoses or treatment available.
Most importantly, think about how the problem is affecting you and what you would like to be able to return to. Your goals help guide the assessment and rehabilitation plan.
Where exercises are appropriate, yes.
Exercises can be discussed and practised during the consultation so that you understand their purpose and how to perform them.
Following your appointment, you can receive a personalised home exercise programme through Physitrack, including instructions and video demonstrations to help you follow the programme independently.
Exercise is prescribed according to the findings of your assessment rather than using a generic programme based solely on your diagnosis.
Hands-on treatment can sometimes be useful, but it is only one component of physiotherapy.
Your online consultation can still help establish what may be contributing to your symptoms and what you can begin doing to manage them.
If your physiotherapist feels that an in-person examination or treatment would be beneficial, you can then arrange a clinic appointment or, where appropriate, a home visit.
Yes. One of the main advantages of online physiotherapy is that you do not need to travel to the Central London clinic.
This can be particularly useful if you are travelling, live further away, or simply prefer the convenience of receiving advice from home.
Where you are located outside the UK, the ability to provide physiotherapy services may depend on applicable professional and regulatory requirements.
Physiotherapy assessment includes considering whether your presentation is appropriate for physiotherapy management.
If your symptoms or history indicate that further medical assessment or investigation may be appropriate, this will be discussed with you.
The aim is not to manage everything through physiotherapy, but to help you make an informed decision about the most appropriate next step.
Yes. Follow-up consultations can be used to review your progress, reassess movement and symptoms, answer questions and progress your rehabilitation programme.
Depending on your needs, your rehabilitation can remain online or you can transition to in-person physiotherapy or gym-based rehabilitation where this would be more appropriate.
